Do you know the typical food of Rome?

We are sure that in Rome you will certainly find the right food for your tastes, regardless of the country you come from. This small guide is intended to help you find your way better.
Remember that the Host of your facility will certainly be able to advise you of the premises of your neighborhood where you can enjoy your meals not as a tourist .... but as real Romans!

Pizza

Pizza in Rome can best be divided into two categories: pizza by the slice and round, whole pizza. In Rome, pizza by the slice, or pizza a taglio (which literally means, “cut pizza”) is usually something to have for a quick lunch. But some Pizza a Taglio in Rome are open late.

Pizza by the slice places are almost always stand-up only, or take-out. The pizza is either made in a large rectangular pan, in an electric oven, or, like long flat “tongues”, hand-formed, in a wood-burning oven.

The ingredients are usually simple, as the pizzas themselves are so thin-crust. Often you will find pizza without cheese, or without tomato. And many pizza by the slice places in Rome are now offering some sort of dessert in the form of pizza stuffed with Nutella and ricotta. It’s really almost impossible to resist this!

Pasta

Around the world, pasta is perhaps the most recognizable Italian dish. So it should come as no surprise to learn that pasta is a major staple of the local diet in the capital city of Rome.
Spaghetti and Bucatini are the top choice among locals and are usually served with a Carbonara,  Amatriciana or Cacio e Pepe sauce.
Look around at what the locals are eating and you might notice that on Thursdays, the plates are all covered in Gnocchi. This is because in Rome, gnocchi is traditionally served and eaten each Thursday as the pasta course in nearly every restaurant and home kitchen.

Carciofi

Artichokes, called carciofi in Italian, are a favourite food item among Romans in some seasons. They can be found on menus two different ways depending on the preference of the chef and the diner. Carciofi alla romana or artichokes in the Roman style, are baked with mint and garlic. Carciofi alla giudia, or artichokes in the Jewish style, are instead pounded flat and then deep-fried. Carciofi are often found on the appetizer menus of Roman restaurants and are a definite must-try food in Rome.

Supplì

Lovers of Italian cuisine might see these tasty treats and assume that they Arancini, a similar dish served up in Sicily. However, Roman citizens will tell you otherwise. Supplì are balls of cooked rice mixed with a red tomato sauce that have been dipped in flour, eggs and breadcrumbs and then deep-fried in oil. The centre of each Supplì is full of gooey and delicious local mozzarella cheese. You might find these delicious treats in a bar or a restaurant as an appetizer, but they are also a cheap way to fill up for lunch while sightseeing throughout Rome.

Porchetta

Porchetta is a deboned, slow-roasted pig. The precise cuts may vary but often include belly and loin seasoned with salt, pepper, and herbs. Although porchetta is pretty ubiquitous and appears at takeaway joints and delis as a sandwich filling, a truly exceptional specimen can be elusive.
For a truly delicious, moist, and perfectly seasoned porchetta experience, when you visit a Grocery or a Pizzeria, order slices of pork sandwiched between crispy pieces of pizza bianca, the simple local flatbread.

Maritozzi

These sweet, similar to the cornetto or the croissant, leavened buns are sliced open and filled with barely sweetened whipped cream. There’s no glamourous way to eat these cream-filled treats, so consider yourself warned.

Tiramisù

Tiramisu quite literally means, “a pick me up.” One of Italy’s most popular, Tiramisu is a rich treat blending the bold flavors of cocoa and espresso with savory mascarpone cheese and wine, layered with ladyfinger biscuits.

Gelato

Rome is home to thousands of gelateria selling scoops of classic flavours and whimsical originals. With such a glut, virtually every Roman has access to gelato en route to work or home, so it should come as no surprise that many locals enjoy this frozen treat on a regular basis.
